Patrick A. Carr, O.S.A.

1847 – 1901 (April 8)

Patrick Augustine Carr, son of Patrick Carr and Mary Burke Carr, was born on August 2, 1847, in Headford, County Galway, Ireland. He was baptized on August 15, 1847, in the church of St. Mary there. He entered Villanova College in 1876 from Amesbury, Massachusetts, where a number of Irish families had settled. On September 26, 1878, he entered the novitiate at Villanova, professed first vows on September 27, 1879, and solemn vows on September 27, 1882. On December 2, 1882, Patrick was ordained to the priesthood with Michael M. Fogarty and John T. Emmet, by Bishop Jeremiah F. Shanahan of Harrisburg, Pa., in the "Gymnasium Church" at Villanova.

Raymond E. Geisser, O.S.A.

1925 – 2010 (April 6)

Raymond Edwin Geisser was born on February 1, 1925, in Riverside, Rhode Island, one of two sons and one daughter of George J. Geisser and Madelyn M. Grady. He was baptized on February 22, 1925, at Saint Brendan's Church, Riverside, R.I. He attended Arthur E. Pratt School and Riverside Junior High School, both in Riverside, R.I., and then East Providence High School, East Providence, R.I. Upon graduation in 1943, he was inducted into the US Army, served in Europe as an Army scout, was part of the D-Day 1944 invasion, and was discharged in April 1946. From 1946 to 1948, he studied at Rhode Island State College and obtained a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He then moved to the Los Angeles area and pursued an MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California between 1948 and 1950. He came into contact with the Augustinians at Our Mother of Good Counsel, Hollywood, while working as an aircraft engineer. In 1954, he applied to the Order and was received into the novitiate on September 9, 1954. After completing his novitiate experience at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, New York, he professed first vows on September 10, 1955. From 1955 to 1957 he completed his studies in Philosophy at Villanova University, and then went to Augustinian College, Washington, DC, for his theological studies, from 1957 to 1961. At the same time he studied Mathematics at the Catholic University of America during the summers between 1957 and 1960. He professed solemn vows on September 10, 1958, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1960 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, DC, by Bishop John McNamara.

Father Geisser's first assignment was to St. Thomas Monastery and Villanova University, where he worked as Assistant Director of Admissions and taught theology for five years, and engineering for one year. In 1966, he was assigned to Casa San Lorenzo and Biscayne College, where he lived and worked until 2000, as Director of Admissions and Registrar, teacher and student advisor.

Father Ray was assigned to Saint Thomas Monastery, Villanova, in 2000, due to failing health. He passed over to the Lord on Tuesday morning, April 6, 2010. Fr. Ray was well known and loved by students, faculty and staff for his many years of service at Biscayne College. He was 85 years old at the time of his death. 

John R. Dunne, O.S.A.

1907 – 1996 (April 4)

John Robert Dunne, son of John M. Dunne and Mary E. MacGregor, was born on February 4, 1907, on Staten Island, New York, and was baptized in the Church of the Sacred Heart there. He received his early education at St. Peter's Grammar School, Staten Island, and attended St. Francis Xavier High School in Manhattan for two years. John entered Augustinian Academy on Staten Island, as a day student, and became a postulant in his senior year. In 1925, he was a member of the first graduating class of the Academy at its Grymes Hill location. On August 15, 1925, his class was the first to become novices in the newly founded Mother of Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, New York. He professed first vows on August 16, 1926, and made solemn profession on August 16, 1929.

Daniel P. Falvey, O.S.A.

1906 – 1962 (April 2)

Daniel Patrick Falvey, son of Thomas D. Falvey and Margaret McCarthy, was born on March 4, 1906, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and was baptized the same day in the Church of the Sacred Heart there. In 1926, he graduated from Sacred Heart High School and then entered the Engineering School of Villanova University, Villanova, Pa. Two years later, he entered the novitiate at New Hamburg, New York, professed first vows on September 10, 1929, and solemn vows on September 10, 1932.

Patrick J. Gallagher, O.S.A.

1880 – 1919 (April 1)

Patrick Joseph Gallagher, son of John Gallagher and Mary Dorcey was born on April 4, 1880, in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland, and was baptized in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church on April 14, 1880. In Ireland, he became a Brother of the Order of St. Francis, accepting the religious name "Conleth." On July 26, 1902, he came to the United States and continued his vocation as a Franciscan, residing in St. Francis College, Loretto, Pennsylvania. On February 27, 1903, his petition to be released from vows was granted, and on September 8, 1904, he entered the novitiate of our province at Villanova, Pa. He professed first vows on September 9, 1905, and solemn vows on September 18, 1908.

Henry T. Conway, O.S.A.

1876 – 1940 (April 1)

Henry Thomas Conway, son of Thomas Conway and Susan McKeon, was born on October 27, 1876, in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, and was baptized on November 5, 1876, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. He attended Villanova College where he won all-American recognition as a football player, and as a Villanova baseball player received many offers from major league baseball clubs. Instead, on May 4, 1897, he entered the novitiate at Villanova, professed simple vows on May 4, 1898, and solemn vows on May 29, 1901.

Edwin A. Dickenson, O.S.A.

1897 – 1952 (March 31)

Edwin Alfred Dickenson, son of Alfred Dickenson and Margaret Lenertz, was born on June 25, 1897, in Buffalo, New York, and baptized in Saint Nicholas Church on July 4, 1897. After his family moved to Chicago, Illinois, Edwin attended Saint Columbanus Parish School for one year, followed by four years at Saint Rita High School. After graduation he spent one year working as a printer and, in September, 1916, entered Villanova College, Villanova, Pennsylvania. On June 14, 1917, he was received into the novitiate at Saint Rita Hall, Villanova, professed first vows on July 23, 1918, and solemn vows on July 23, 1921.

Edward J. Carney, O.S.A.

1905 – 1988 (March 31)

Edward James Carney was born to James Carney and Catherine Malloy in Everett, Massachusetts, on September 7, 1905. He had two brothers and two sisters. Baptized in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Everett, his early education was in the local grammar and junior high schools. In September 1920, at the age of 14, Edward enrolled as a postulant at Villanova Preparatory School, Villanova, Pennsylvania. Following graduation in 1924 he began his novitiate year and professed simple vows on June 26, 1925.

James Fox, O.S.A.

1840 – 1905 (March 28)

Michael Fox, son of Patrick and Margaret Fox was born in Tipperary, Ireland, and was baptized on December 29, 1840, in the Parish of Ballyneale and Graugemockler, Ireland.

On February 2, 1889, Michael, was vested at Villanova, Pennsylvania. He professed first vows on September 19, 1895 with the religious name Brother James and, on September 21, 1898, made solemn profession.

John Cerruti, O.S.A.

1880 – 1919 (March 28)

Dario Cerruti, son of Innocenzo Cerruti and Rosa Romano, was born on March 3, 1880, in Genazzano, Italy, and entered the Order as a member of the Roman Province. He made his novitiate at the convent of Sant’Agostino in Carpineto Romano, and was professed with the religious name, John, on November 8, 1896, and was ordained in 1903.

John L. Gallagher, O.S.A.

1906 – 1982 (March 27)

John Leo Gallagher, son of John L. Gallagher and Elizabeth McMenamin, was born in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania on October 11, 1906. He attended Saint Mary's Parish grammar school in Phoenixville and Saint Mary's Commercial High School for one year. After working for a year in his hometown he entered Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, where he distinguished himself as a student leader, president of his class, and won letters in baseball, football, and basketball. Received into Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, New York on September 8, 1927, he professed simple vows on September 9, 1928, and solemn vows on September 9, 1931.

Arthur J. Ennis, O.S.A.

1922 – 1994 (March 27)

Arthur John Ennis was born on October 22, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, to Arthur John Ennis and Carolin Prestin. He had one brother and two sisters. Baptized in Saint Gabriel's Church, Brooklyn, he attended the local public elementary school as well as Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Parish School, Jamaica N.Y. In 1937 Arthur transferred as a postulant to Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, N.Y. He made his novitiate at New Hamburg, N.Y., and professed simple vows on September 10, 1941, and three years later solemn vows.

Francis L. Dennis, O.S.A.

1907 – 1962 (March 27)

Francis Leo Dennis, son of Francis L. Dennis, Sr., and Winifred Spellman, was born on October 11, 1907, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and was baptized in Saint Mary's Church there. After graduating from Saint Mary's Parochial School, he attended Saint John's Preparatory School, Danvers, Mass., and from 1922 to 1924, he continued his studies at Villanova Preparatory School, Villanova, Pennsylvania. On June 25, 1924, he entered the novitiate at Villanova, professed simple vows on June 26, 1925, and made solemn profession on October 11, 1928.

Lawrence J. Gerrity, O.S.A.

1906 – 1981 (March 27)

Lawrence Joseph Gerrity, son of William Gerrity and Catherine Katie Barrett, was bom in Centralia, Pennsylvania on November 23, 1906. Coming from a family of two sisters and three brothers, one of whom became a priest in the diocese of Harrisburg, Lawrence began his education in the grammar school of Saint Ignatius Parish, Centralia and was enrolled at Augustinian Academy, Grymes Hill, Staten Island, from 1926-1929. He was received into the Augustinian Order on September 10,1929, pronounced simple vows on September 11, 1930 and made solemn profession on September 11, 1933. Lawrence entered the professorium in 1930 and graduated from Villanova College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1935. Following theological studies at Augustinian College, Washington, DC, he was ordained to the priesthood at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception there on June 7, 1938.

Father Gerrity dedicated his entire ministry as a friar to serving our parishes in New York State. In 1939 he was assigned to Saint Paul Parish, Mechanicville; in 1945 he was transferred to Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, Jamaica, where he remained until 1951. That year he was appointed to Saint James Parish, Carthage,  and in 1957 to Immaculate Conception Parish, Hoosick Falls. In 1965, he was named prior and pastor of Saint John the Baptist Parish, Schaghticoke, where he remained for the next ten years. Here, in addition to his assiduous attention to all the duties of pastoral care he undertook an extensive renovation and redecoration of the entire parish plant.

In his retirement Father Gerrity returned to Hoosick Falls and the parish of the Immaculate Conception. In 1980, due to failing health he was assigned to Saint Thomas Monastery, Villanova. By his persevering efforts Father Gerrity in his lifetime overcame numerous obstacles, while his obvious sincerity endeared him to the parishioners. An historical buff he delighted in assembling data on the early history of Hoosick Falls and the surrounding area. He was good to the people and they responded with an enduring affection.

Father Gerrity died on March 27, 1981, and is buried in the Augustinian plot at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

 

John J. Farrell, O.S.A.

1861 – 1939 (March 26)

John James Farrell was born on November 2, 1861, to Peter Farrell and Mary McGlensy, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was baptized on November 10, 1861, in the Church of St. John the Evangelist. He received his early education in the public schools, and in 1890, entered the Order as a novice at Villanova, Pa. He professed simple vows on May 4, 1891, and solemn vows on May 4, 1894. John was ordained to the priesthood on June 8, 1895, by Most Reverend Patrick J. Ryan, Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Henry L. Daly, O.S.A.

908 – 1975 (March 26)

Henry Louis Daly, was born on April 12, 1908, to Philip Daly and Mary McLoughlin, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania., and was baptized on May 3, 1908, in the Church of Saint Gabriel. He graduated from Saint Thomas Parish School, Rosemont, Pa., and on September 10, 1922, was admitted as a postulant to Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York. He became a novice on August 15, 1926, professed first vows on August 16, 1927, and solemn vows three years later.

Dominic J. Berra, O.S.A.

1914 – 1994 (March 26)

Dominic James Berra, son of John Berra and Felicia Brier, was born in Trevorton, Pennsylvania, on September 21, 1914. He was ordained on May 18, 1944 in Washington, D.C. He was awarded an MA degree from the Catholic University of America, as well as a degree in theology from Augustinian College. In the early years of his ministry, he served in Cuba teaching at the University of Santo Tomas, where he also earned a PhD in theology in 1948. 

Dominic J. Caniglia, O.S.A.

1922 – 1979 (March 25)

Dominic Joseph Caniglia was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 12, 1922, the son of Ettore Caniglia and Louise Cinalli, and was baptized at Saint Rita Church there on March 11, 1923. He attended Saint Rita Parochial School until 1936, and then spent one year at Southeast Catholic High School, also in Philadelphia, before entering Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, as a postulant in September 1937. He received his high school diploma in 1940 and was received as a novice on September 9, of the same year. He professed simple vows on September 10, 1941, and then pursued his college course at Villanova College, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy in 1945.

Anthony A. Gasparro, O.S.A.

1914 – 2002 (March 20)

Anthony Angelo Gasparro, son of Bernard and Rose Gasparro, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 7, 1914, and was baptized at St. Mary Magdalena de Pazzi Church, Philadelphia, the following May 28th. He received his primary education at Drexel School, Vare Jr. High School and Barrett Jr. High School before entering Augustinian Academy, on Staten Island, New York, as a sophomore postulant, in September, 1930. He began his novitiate year on September 9, 1933, made his simple profession on September 10, 1934 and was solemnly professed on September 10, 1937. He earned a BA degree from Villanova University in June, 1938, and pursued theological studies at Augustinian College, Washington, D.C. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 1941 at the Shine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C.

Father Anthony exercised his priestly ministry in the Augustinian parishes of Holy Rosary, Lawrence, Massachusetts, Saint Rita, Philadelphia, Saint Mary in Vineland, New Jersey, Assumption/Saint Paul, Mechanicville, N.Y., Saint Nicholas of Tolentine, Atlantic City, N.J., and Saint Nicholas of Tolentine, Philadelphia. 

An accomplished artist in painting and porcelain, Father Gasparro was a member of the Fra Angelica Guild for Artists, an organization for Christian artists interested in portraying religious themes in their work. Throughout his ministries he was solicitous for the sick and elderly and instructed the young in the faith. 

On March 7, 2002, due to failing health, Father was transferred to the Health Care Unit of Saint Thomas Monastery, Villanova, Pa., where he died two weeks later, on March 20th. Father Gasparro is buried in the Augustinian plot at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.
