Francis P. Crawford, O.S.A.

1917-1979 (March 19)

Francis Paul Crawford was born on May 10, 1917, in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, to Robert Crawford and Mary Strantzk. He was baptized there on May 20, 1917, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He received his elementary and high school education at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. He entered Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York in 1936, and was received into Our Mother of Good Counsel Novitiate on September 9, 1937. Francis professed simple vows on September 10, 1938, and solemn vows on September 10, 1941.

Henry J. Eagan, O.S.A.

1914 – 1999 (March 16)

Henry James Eagan, son of Daniel Eagan and Mary Power, was born on February 1, 1914, and was baptized on February 8, 1914 in St. Agatha's Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His early education began at St. Leonard Academy and at St. Joseph Preparatory School in Philadelphia. He graduated from West Catholic High School in 1934, and entered the novitiate on September 16th of the same year. Henry professed simple vows on November 17, 1935, and made solemn profession on November 17, 1938.

John V. Casey, O.S.A.

1912 – 2006 (March 13)

John Vincent Casey was born on August 4, 1912, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the son of John M. Casey and Mary Pomeroy, one of four brothers and three sisters. He was baptized on August 8, 1912 at Saint Mary's Church, Lawrence, and attended that parish elementary school, graduating in 1926. He received his high school education as a postulant at Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York. He was received into the novitiate September 12, 1931, and after a year at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, N.Y., he professed simple vows on September 13, 1932.

Francis Ashe, O.S.A.

1820 – 1848 (March 13)

Francis Ashe was born in January, 1820, in Cork, Ireland. In 1837, he entered the novitiate in Italy and was ordained to the priesthood by December 15, 1842. Sometime between May and August, 1843, Father Ashe emigrated to the United States with Father John O'Dwyer and professed cleric and sub-deacon, William Harnett, and began parochial duties at the parish of Saint Augustine, Philadelphia. The parish register of 1843, lists him as having performed his first baptism on September 3, and his first marriage on October 9.

Robert A. Walsh, O.S.A.

Robert Augustine Walsh was born on September 20, 1938, in Lawrence Massachusetts, one of two sons and three daughters of Robert A. Walsh and Anna Hanlon. Robert was baptized on October 16, 1938 in the Church of Saint Laurence O'Toole, Lawrence. Later the family eventually moved to Andover, MA, where Robert attended the parish grammar school.

Edmund J. Dobbin, O.S.A.

1935 – 2015 (March 8)

Edmund Joseph Dobbin was born on November 20, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, one of four sons and a daughter of Edmund H. Dobbin and Anne V. Kelly, and was baptized on December 8, 1935 at Saint Anselm Church, Brooklyn. Later the family moved to Staten Island, where Edmund attended Saint Clare Parish School, from 1941 to 1949, and Augustinian Academy as a day student, from 1949 to 1953. Following graduation, he was received into the Order as a novice on September 9, 1953, and after a year at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, New York, he professed simple vows on September 10, 1954. He attended Villanova University, from 1954 until 1958, received his BA in Philosophy, and professed solemn vows on September 10, 1957.

Michael J. Collins, O.S.A.

1834 – 1887 (March 7)

Michael Joseph Collins, son of Patrick Collins and Catherine Lee, was born on September 25, 1834, in Dublin, Ireland. In December 1847, the Collins family immigrated to the United States and resided in Baltimore, Maryland. Michael attended the Christian Brothers' School, and then, in 1850, entered St. Charles' Seminary, Ellicott City, Maryland, and in September, 1856, continued his studies in St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Md.

Joseph Conaghan, O.S.A.

1854 – 1927 (March 6)

James Conaghan, son of Denis Conaghan and Mary Moore, was born on April 14, 1854, at Summit Hill, Pennsylvania. He was baptized on April 15, 1854, in the Church of St. Joseph, Summit Hill.

On July 28, 1900, James was vested at Villanova, entered the novitiate there in 1905, and, taking the name Brother Joseph, professed vows on August 2, 1906. Three years later, on August 10, 1909, he professed solemn vows.

Erbio J. Caraballo, O.S.A.

1917 – 1989 (March 5)

Erbio Jose Caraballo was born in Santiago de las Vegas, Cuba, on November 30, 1917, to Ramiro Caraballo and Maria Trinidad Escobeda. He had one sister and three brothers, one of whom became a diocesan priest. Baptized in the church of Santiago Apostol in Santiago de las Vegas, his early education was in the local Cuban schools. Upon graduation from the Academia Valmana in 1938, he moved to Havana and came in contact with Father John McKniff, O.S.A., at the church of El Cristo. In 1943 Erbio Caraballo was accepted as a postulant at Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York.

John M. Driscoll, O.S.A.

1923 – 2011 (March 2)

John Michael Driscoll was born on September 14, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of John Stephen Driscoll and Mary Ann Coll. He had one brother and two sisters. He was baptized on September 23, 1923, at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish, Philadelphia, and attended Our Mother of Sorrows Grade School, from 1929 to 1936, and Saint Thomas More High School, from 1936 to 1940. In September 1942, he was accepted as a postulant at Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, and was received into the novitiate on September 9, 1943. After his year at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, N.Y., he professed simple vows on September 10, 1944, and pursued studies at Villanova College, where he received his BA in Philosophy in 1948. He professed solemn vows on September 10, 1947.

Edward A. Dailey, O.S.A.

1839 – 1901 (March 2)

Edward Augustine Dailey, son of Carol Dailey and Anne Woods, was born on June 9, 1839, in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland. He arrived in the United States when he was quite young and received his early education at Saint Augustine School, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On September 18, 1858, he entered the novitiate at Villanova, professed simple vows on September 19, 1859, and solemn vows three years later. On December 21, 1862, he was ordained to the priesthood by James Frederic Wood, Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Leo J. Collins

1848 – 1888 (March 1)

Leo Jeremiah Collins was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1848 and arrived at Villanova, Pennsylvania, in January or February of 1888, as a candidate for the brotherhood. Within two months he became seriously ill and died on March 1, 1888. Shortly before his death, Leo Collins was received as a Tertiary with the name Jeremiah and given the Cincture of Saint Augustine by Father Charles Mary Driscoll, O.S.A.

Cornelius J. Ford, O.S.A.

1883 – 1939 (February 27)

Cornelius John Ford, son of John Ford and Honora Mahoney, was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on October 7, 1883, and baptized the following day in Saint Mary's Church, Lawrence. He received his early education at Saint Mary's Parochial School and Saint Mary's High School before entering Villanova College. Cornelius was professed on June 30, 1903, and was ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, May 25, 1907, at Saint Charles Seminary, Overbrook, Pennsylvania, by Patrick J. Ryan, Archbishop of Philadelphia.

William T. Eagan, O.S.A.

1907 – 1971 (February 27)

William Thomas Eagan, son of James Eagan and Anna Rooney, was born in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, on February 25, 1907, but he was raised in nearby Kingston. He graduated from the Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York in 1928, and entered the novitiate in September, 1928. William professed simple vows on September 10, 1929 and solemn vows on the same day in 1932.

Edwin J. Crosby, O.S.A.

1910 – 1986 (February 26)

Edwin Joseph Crosby was born August 31, 1910 in Troy, New York, to George Crosby and Sara O'Neill. He was baptized September 7, 1910 at Saint Augustine Church, Troy, and there received the Sacrament of Confirmation on May 23, 1921. He received his elementary education at Saint Augustine Parish School, and graduated in 1926 from Catholic Central High School, also in Troy. For a short time he worked as a grocery clerk, before undertaking post-graduate studies as a postulant at Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York. Ned was received into the novitiate on September 8, 1927. He professed simple vows on September 9, 1928 and solemn vows on September 9, 1931.

Louis M. Edge, O.S.A.

1825 – 1870 (February 24)

Louis Matthew Edge, son of Philip Edge and Mary McGrath, was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, in 1825. His early education was obtained in Ireland after which he joined the Christian Brothers in England. In 1847 he came to the United States and joined the Third Order of Saint Francis at Loretto, Pennsylvania, where he taught in the college for five years. He was vested as a novice at Villanova on January 11, 1852, and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop John Neumann in the Chapel of the House of the Good Shepherd in Philadelphia, on June 19, 1854.

Francis A. Diehl, O.S.A.

1895 – 1973 (February 24)

Francis Aloysius Diehl who was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 8, 1895, was one of 12 children of William Diehl and Katherine Weldon. Among his brothers, was Father Cornelius Diehl, O.S.B. of Belmont Abbey in North Carolina. Francis entered Saint Rita's Hall at Villanova, Pa. in 1908, and was received into the novitiate there in June, 1912. He professed first vows on June 20, 1913, and solemn vows on June 23, 1916. He graduated from Villanova College in that same latter year and was ordained to the priesthood on June 8, 1919 by Archbishop Dennis Dougherty in the Overbrook Seminary.

Francis G. Di Matteo, O.S.A.

1904 – 1996 (February 24)

Francis Gabriel Di Matteo, son of Anthony Di Matteo and Filomena De Ascentis, was born on September 12, 1904, in Macedon, New York, and was baptized on October 9, 1904, in the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua in Rochester. He received his early education at the Seymour Street School, the Lincoln School and the school of the Holy Family, and later worked for a brief time in Auburn, New York, and also in West Chester, Pennsylvania. "Dominic," as he is known to most Augustinians, made a visit with his parents to a family residence in Ponzano, Italy, and was called to serve in the peace-time Italian Army. After thirteen months of military service he returned to the United States and, in 1929, entered Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, as a postulant. He began his novitiate year on September 9, 1932, professed first vows on September 11. 1933, and three years later made solemn profession.

Peter Crane, O.S.A.

1834 – 1904 (February 24)

Peter Crane, son of James Crane and Mary O'Connor, was born in Bannow, County Wexford, Ireland, on July 20, 1834. He was the fourth of the five Crane brothers to join our Order. Together with his brother Mark and Thomas Galberry, he entered the novitiate at Villanova on January 1, 1852, and professed vows on January 4, 1853. He was ordained to the priesthood at Villanova in the Old Chapel of 1844 by Bishop John Neumann on November 1, 1857.
