James Conaghan, son of Denis Conaghan and Mary Moore, was born on April 14, 1854, at Summit Hill, Pennsylvania. He was baptized on April 15, 1854, in the Church of St. Joseph, Summit Hill.
On July 28, 1900, James was vested at Villanova, entered the novitiate there in 1905, and, taking the name Brother Joseph, professed vows on August 2, 1906. Three years later, on August 10, 1909, he professed solemn vows.
Brother Joseph was for many years, succeeding Brother Mark, the community baker at Villanova. He died at Villanova, Pa. on March 6, 1927 at the age of seventy-three. He is buried in the Community Cemetery at Villanova University.
