Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A., President of Villanova University was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor on May 9, 2015, at a ceremony held at Ellis Island. Awarded by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO), the Medal awarded is a tribute to immigrants to American and their children, and the contributions they have made.
A native of Ireland, Father Peter's father immigrated to the United States in 1929. Each year, about 100 persons are awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Father Peter joins a list of past recipients that includes six former Presidents of the United States, former Justices of the Supreme Court Sandra Day O'Connor and William Rehnquist, and others including Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Gregory Peck, Bob Hope, Colin Powell and Norman Schwarzkopf.
