Joseph G. Bugeia, O.S.A.

1884 – 1969 (January 25)

Joseph Gelasius Bugeia, son of Paul Bugeia and Mary Chircop, was born in Rabat, Malta, on February 1, 1884. He was baptized in the Cathedral of Saint Paul, and it was on the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul that he died. On June 23, 1901, Joseph entered the novitiate of the Maltese Province at Saint Mark Monastery in Rabat, and made his simple profession on June 24, 1902. Following theological studies, he was ordained to the priesthood in the Cathedral of Gozo, Malta, on June 5, 1909. 

Charles A. Beckerman, O.S.A.

1890 – 1933 (January 25)


Charles Aloysius Beckerman, son of George Beckerman and Karoline Klein-Akernau, was born in Veen, Prussia, on September 28, 1890. His primary education was obtained at Saint Alphonsus and at Saint Vincent schools, Philadelphia. From Saint Vincent Orphanage, Tacony, Pennsylvania, he entered the Augustinian Preparatory Scholasticate, Saint Rita Hall, Villanova. He was received as a novice on July 4, 1907, and made profession of vows on July 6, 1908.

John L. Gilman, O.S.A.

1910 – 1973 (January 25)

John Lawrence Gilman was born May 15, 1910 in the Bronx, New York, to Sylvester Gilman and Mary Karney. He was baptized on June 12, 1910, at the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, the Bronx, and was confirmed on April 3, 1922 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Staten Island, New York. After receiving his high school diploma from Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, he was received into the novitiate on September 11, 1929. He professed simple vows on September 11, 1930 and solemn vows on September 11, 1933. John earned a B. A. in Philosophy from Villanova College, Villanova, Pennsylvania, in 1934, and pursued theological studies at Augustinian College, Washington, D.C. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 15, 1937, and did graduate studies at Catholic University of America, Washington.

Father Gilman taught at Saint Rita High School, Chicago, Illinois, from 1937 to 1940 and from 1941 to 1949. He served in the intervening year as assistant pastor of Saint Matthew Parish, Flint, Michigan. In 1949 he became a chaplain in the United States Army. He was stationed for one year at Fort Lee, Virginia, and then was sent to Japan. After two weeks in Japan, the Korean war began. Father Gilman was sent to Korea with the first troops of the 21st Regiment. After his return to the United States, he served at Fort Dix, New Jersey, attaining the rank of Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Following his discharge from the Army, Father Gilman was asigned to St. Monica Novitiate, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, where he was Director of Novices from 1956 to 1962.
From 1962 to 1968 he was prior of Saint Joseph Mission House, Fort Wayne, Indiana. He returned in 1968 to Saint Monica, Oconomowoc, where he served as prior. In 1971 ill health occasioned his retirement. He remained at Saint Monica until the time of his death January 25, 1973.

Father Gilman enjoyed music and composed several religious and secular songs. One of them, Staten Island Ferryboat Blues, won a prize in 1952 on the C.B.S. radio program Songs for Sale, starring Steve Allen.

He is buried in the Augustinian plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois.

Bernard E. Daly, O.S.A.

871 – 1931 (January 23)

Bernard Edward Daly was born in Kells, County Meath, Ireland, on October 4, 1871, the son of James Daly and Mary Kiernan. After immigrating to the United States, he studied public scools in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where he was confirmed at Saint Mary’s Church by Archbishop Williams. Bernard entered the novitiate at Villanova, Pennsylvania on May 4, 1897, and made profession of vows on May 4, 1898. He was professed solemnly on May 29, 1901. He was ordained by Bishop Prendergast at the Philadelphia Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, on Wednesday, February 5, 1902. 

Leo P. Cavanaugh, O.S.A.

1912 – 1984 (January 23)


Leo Patrick Cavanaugh, son of Matthew and Annie Cavanaugh, was born in Medford, Massachusetts on August 10, 1912. After attending Boston College High School and Boston College, he entered the Order on September 13, 1938. He professed simple vows on October 31, 1939, and solemn vows on October 31, 1942. He studied theology at Augustinian College, Washington DC, and was ordained to the priesthood at Trinity College, Washington DC, on May 29, 1943.

James J. Blake, O.S.A.

1850 – 1892 (January 21)


James Joseph Blake was born in Clonaslee, Ireland, on February 28, 1850, the son of James Blake and Anna Doolan. He entered the novitiate at Villanova, Pennsylvania, in 1871, made his first profession on January 22, 1872, and his solemn profession of January 24, 1875. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Stephen Ryan, C.M. of Buffalo, New York, at the church of the Vincentians in Germantown on July 19, 1875.

Henry A. Caffrey, O.S.A.

1892 – 1979 (January 20)

Henry Anthony Caffrey, son of William A. Caffrey and Catherin Fleming, was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, November 12, 1892. His early education was obtained in his native city at the Bruce Grammar School and Lawrence High School where he was editor of the class monthly magazine in his senior year, acted in the class play, played varsity football for two years and was valedictorian when he graduated in 1910. For the next four years he worked as a payroll clerk in the Wood Worsted Mills. At the age of 21, in 1914, he enrolled as a postulant at the Augustinian Preparatory Scholasticate, Saint Rita Hall, Villanova, September.

Mark Crane, O.S.A.

1831 – 1871 (January 19)

Mark Crane, son of James Crane and Mary O'Connor was born in the parish of Bannow, Count Wexford, Ireland, on August 10, 1831. One of a family of eight brothers and one sister, he came to Villanova from Ireland together with his brother Peter in November of 1849. The two brothers entered the novitiate at Villanova in January 1852, and made profession of vows on January 4, 1853.

Vincent Altimare, O.S.A.

1940 – 1975 (January 18)

Vincent Altimare was born on February 5, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Salvatore Altimare and Maria Carmela Rotondaro. He was baptized by Fr. Louis Diorio, O.S.A., at Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Church, Philadelphia. In this parish of the Augustinian Vice Province of Philadelphia, Vincent was raised, and from here he entered the Order as a postulant in September 1958. He made his simple profession on September 10, 1961, and was ordained to the priesthood on August 24, 1968.

Gerard M. Duff, O.S.A.

1934 – 2007 (January 16)

Gerard Michael Duff was born on May 19, 1934, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, the son of Patrick Duff and Mary Kiely. He had a twin brother, Lawrence, and a sister, Margaret (Purvis). He was baptized at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, Bryn Mawr, on June 3, 1934, and attended Our Mother of Good Counsel Parochial School from 1939 to 1947. He entered Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York as a postulant in 1947, and Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, N.Y., in 1951. Jerry made his simple profession of vows on September 10, 1952.

Edward G. Dohan, O.S.A.

1870 – 1936 (January 16)

Edward George Dohan was born in Troy, New York, on January 9, 1870, to Timothy Dohan and Katharine Sheedy. In December, 1886, he joined the Christian Brothers at Amawalk, New York, and taught with them at Manhattanville and at the De La Salle Institute. He eventually left the Brothers in 1893, and completed studies for a Bachelor of Science degree at Villanova College on June 27, 1894. He applied, and was received into the novitiate, in 1895 at Villanova, and made his first profession of vows on May 4, 1896.

John F. Galloway, O.S.A.

1914 – 1970 (January 15)

John Francis Galloway was born July 7, 1914 in Dumbarton, Scotland, to James Galloway and Mary Burgess, and was baptized there on July 19, 1914 at St. Patrick’s Church. He received his elementary education at St. Patrick School, before the family immigrated to the United States, after which he continued his education at Saint Francis de Sales School, Denver, Colorado, and St. Thomas Aquinas School, Bronx, New York. He attended Saint Nicholas of Tolentine High School, Bronx, for three years, then transferred as postulant to Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, which granted him his high school diploma in 1932.

David J. Duffy, O.S.A.

1931 – 2006 (January 9)

David Duffy was born on February 24, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of William J. Duffy and Genevieve Colvey. He was baptized March 22, 1931, in Most Blessed Sacrament Church, Philadelphia, and attended St. Laurence Parish School, Upper Darby, Pa. He began high school at West Catholic High School, Philadelphia, Pa., in 1944, and transferred in 1946 to Malvern Preparatory School, Malvern, Pa. Upon graduation in 1948, he was admitted to Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, for a year of post-graduate studies, before being received into the Order as a novice at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, N.Y. He professed simple vows on September 10, 1950, and began studies at Villanova College, graduating in 1953 with an AB degree in philosophy.

Frederick F. Commins, O.S.A.

1871 – 1924 (January 9)

Frederick Francis Commins was born in Carthage, New York on July 4, 1871 to Richard Commins and Mary Conway. He entered the novitiate at Villanova, Pennsylvania, in September 1891, and made his first profession on September 4, 1892. Three years later, he made solemn profession on September 19, 1895. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1896 by Archbishop Patrick Ryan at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.

James A. Darragh, O.S.A.

1838 – 1887 (January 7)

James Alexander Darragh, son of Charles Darragh and Catherine McDonald, was born in New York City, November 19, 1838. He was received as a novice at Villanova on September 22, 1856, and pronounced vows in the Order on October 15, 1857. Along with James Waldron, O.S.A., he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop James Wood in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, May 26, 1861

James D. Clark, O.S.A.

1911 – 1982 (January 4)

James Daniel Clark was born August 14, 1911 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to Francis S. Clark and Regina Twibill. He was baptized August 26, 1911, at Star of the Sea Church, Atlantic City, and was confirmed on May 6, 1922 in the Chapel of the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was a student. After beginning his high school education at Saint Joseph Preparatory School, Philadelphia, James transferred to Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, as a postulant, from which he graduated in 1930.

Thomas J. Dillon, O.S.A.

1931 – 2000 (January 2)

Thomas Joseph Dillon, son of William Dillon and Catherine Mullen, was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on October 13, 1931. He received his early education at Saint Patrick School, Malvern, Pa., and then Malvern Preparatory School where he was elected class officer and a member of the student council. After graduation he entered Augustinian Academy on Staten Island, New York, as a post graduate, in September, 1949. The following year he entered Our Mother of Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, New York and made his simple profession of vows on September 10, 1951. In September 1954, he professed solemn vows.

Jan H. Busch, O.S.A.

1924 – 2001 (January 1)

Jan Henricus Busch was born on August 26, 1924 of Arnold J. Busch and E. A. Masion in Dordrecht, The Netherlands. He attended St. Antonius School in Dordrecht, and then the Gymnasium Augustinianum from 1936 to 1942. He entered the novitiate of the Dutch Province on September 9, 1942, professed simple vows on September 10, 1943, and made solemn profession on September 12, 1946. From 1942 to 1949, he did his theological studies in his home province, and was ordained to the priesthood on March 12, 1949, at Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
