John Joseph Barthouski, the son of Joseph Barthouski and Mary Ludwig, was born in Lebau, Prussia, on December 27, 1877. While still young, he immigrated to the United States with his family, and received his early education at Saint Mary's Academy in Hoosick Falls, New York. He entered the novitiate at Villanova, Pennsylvania, in 1896, made his first profession of vows on May 4, 1897, and his solemn profession of June 7, 1900. Following studies, he was ordained to the priesthood at Villanova on January 19, 1901 by Auxiliary Bishop Edmond Prendergast.
Father Barthouski taught at the Augustinian Academy on Staten Island, N.Y., and later at Saint Rita's High School in Chicago, Illinois. At various times her served as prior and pastor at Saint Clare's parish in Chicago, at Saint Augustine's in Detroit, Michigan, and at Saint Clare's in Grosse Pointe, Mich. At the Provincial Chapter of 1938, he was elected prior and pastor of Saint Augustine's Church in Philadelphia, Pa., and continued as pastor for the next 18 years. He was a Definitor of the Province from 1944 to 1956. At the Provincial Chapter of 1956, he was again made prior of Saint Augustine's.
Father Barthouski was 80 when he died in Saint Joseph's Hospital in Philadelphia on July 30, 1957. His Mass of Requiem was offered on Friday, August 2, 1957, after which he was buried in the Community Cemetery at Villanova.
