James Patrick Curran, son of John Curran and Anna Louise Murphy, was born in Milford, Massachusetts on March 10, 1858. He entered the novitiate at Villanova, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1882, and professed vows on July 4, 1883. He made his solemn profession on July 5, 1886. James was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Patrick Ryan at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul on November 17, 1887.

After ordination, Father Curran was assigned, in February, 1887, to Saint Mary's Parish in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and in September, 1892, was transferred to Schaghticoke, New York. He was appointed rector of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Waterford, N. Y. in July, 1894. He was rector at Waterford when struck seriously with a kidney ailment in September, 1901. He died on October 12, 1901, at the age of 43, and was buried in Saint Saint John's Cemetery in Troy, N. Y.
