James P. Conway, O.S.A.
1930 – 2014 (April 28)
James Patrick Conway was born on July 27, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Patrick Conway and Margaret Cribbin, and was baptized on August 17, 1930 at Saint Joseph Church, Tremont, New York. He attended St. Barnabas Parish School from 1936 to 1937, and St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish School, Bronx, from 1937 to 1943, and St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School from 1944 to 1948. He enrolled as a postulant at Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York in 1951, and was received as a novice on September 9, 1952. The following year at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, New York, he professed simple vows on September 10, 1953. He attended Villanova University from 1953 to 1956, and received a BA in Philosophy. For his theological studies he went to Augustinian College, Washington, DC in 1956, and professed solemn vows on September 10, 1956. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1960, at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, DC, by Bishop John McNamara.
Fr. Conway was first assigned, in 1960, to St. Joseph Friary and Monsignor Bonner High School, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania as a teacher. From 1961 to 1968 he served in our parishes in the New York City area: Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Staten Island from 1961 to 1965, and St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, Bronx, New York from 1965 to 1968. He returned briefly to Monsignor Bonner High School in 1968 for one year, and then served at Mount Augustine Retreat House, Staten Island, New York until 1981. He was on a leave of absence from 1981 to 1994, and in that latter year was assigned to Saint Augustine Parish, Andover, Massachusetts. From 2001 to 2006 he was a member of the community at Saint Thomas of Villanova Monastery, Villanova. From 2006 to 2008, he resided at St. Augustine Friary, Villanova. In 2008 he returned to St. Thomas Monastery, and then resided at Manor Care Nursing Facility in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania where he died on Monday, April 28, 2014.
A wake was held preceding his funeral Mass on Friday, May 2, at St. Thomas of Villanova Monastery Chapel, Villanova, Pa. Prior Provincial Anthony Genovese celebrated the Mass. Fr. Edward Dixey, O.S.A., preached the homily. Fr. Conway is buried in the family plot at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, Westchester County, New York.
