'I Won’t Hurt You’ Meeting Christ in a Padded Cell
On October 15th, Commonwealmagazine.org published  I Won’t Hurt You’ Meeting Christ in a Padded Cell  by  Fr. Paul Morrissey, O.S.A. This powerful story begins with:

“You took all of this on, Lord.” This was my prayer after I visited “Peter” in the mental-health unit in a prison in Philadelphia. The twenty-five-year-old man had murdered a neighbor in a fit of rage for unclear reasons. Since his arrest, he had been confined in prison, awaiting assessment to determine if he would stand trial. I was already at the prison visiting other inmates when the supervisor of the Catholic chaplaincy called to ask me to visit Peter..."

All Four One, One Four All
by Keara McNulty

"As I prepared to begin my year of service with the Augustinian Volunteers, I met up with an AV alumna to ask her some last minute questions and talk about the year to come. We talked about many things but one thing she said that stuck out to me was, “you learn that you are first in service to your community before you even get to your service site.” I didn’t particularly understand what she meant but was eager to find out how it would fit into my year of service in San Diego..."

Augustinian Secular Groups are Forming
Augustinian Secular Groups are a branch of the Augustinian family, made up of lay people who are called to live the Christian faith by following the inspiration of Augustinian spirituality. A Secular Augustinian shares the Religious Order's spirit and is governed by the Order and collaborates in its work. Yet, its members do not take public vows nor live community life. Their rule is designed for people "living in the world."

"I was in prison and you visited me"
A National Catholic Reporter Article
by Fr. Paul F. Morrissey, O.S.A.

"David enters the glass-enclosed room and greets me. We've met before, at the time he
was first arrested years ago. Like then, his
eyes strike me. Back then, I felt like Jesus Christ was looking out at me from his catatonic stare. It isn't the same stare now. In his orange jumpsuit, with his hands and arms tightly
cuffed and chained together at his waist, he smiles tentatively. I glance at his feet where another set of chains
constrain him. Like an animal, I think. Could he be dangerous? Might
he feel extra vulnerable? I ask anyway,  "Can I hug you?" He nods yes
and I do. We sit in the two facing plastic chairs, and I move the small round table between us..."
