James E. Farrell, O.S.A.

1921 – 1999 (September 29)

James Edward Farrell was born in Rochester, New York, the son of James H. Farrell and Nora A. Burke, on December 9, 1921. He received his early education at Saint Augustine Parish School and the Aquinas Institute of Rochester, and attended Niagara University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. Before entering the Province, he spent more than twenty years in the insurance business. In April, 1967 he sought admittance to the community as a Brother candidate. Following his novitiate, he professed simple vows on June 6, 1970, and solemn vows on September 16, 1973. His brother, William Farrell, was also a member of our Province.

From 1972 until 1982 Brother Jim was assigned to Saint Thomas Monastery, Villanova University. In 1982 he was appointed treasurer of Immaculate Conception Community, Hoosick Falls, N.Y. In 1990, due to illness, he resided at Our Mother of Good Counsel Monastery, Merrimack College, Massachusetts, and in 1994, was transferred to Saint Thomas Monastery, Villanova. Brother Jim died on September 29, 1999 at Bryn Mawr Hospital, Pennsylvania. He was 77 years of age.

Brother Jim was a congenial man with a wry sense of humor. He also was a compassionate individual who gave wise counsel, especially to parish groups concerned with divorced and single parents and the elderly.
